On the 30th of August, a pleasant and cloudy day in Vellore, a large group of radiologists from all over India arrived at Vellore to attend the Mid-term CME of the ISVIR, conducted at the Christian Medical College, Vellore.
After an early breakfast, the CME started off at 8.00 AM in the morning with the inauguration of the program. Dr. Rekha Cherian, Dr. Ravi Korula (Associate director, CMC) and Dr. Sridhar Gibikote gave introductory speeches and this was followed by the "lighting of the lamp" ceremony, with Dr. Chander Mohan, Dr. Khandelwal, Dr. Ravi Korula, Dr. Kulasekaran and Dr. Rekha Cherian taking part.
The CME was divided into three sessions covering the topics of peripheral venous interventions, hepatic venous interventions and neuro-interventions, with appxoximately equal time being devoted to each theme. A host of eminent and accomplished speakers from all over the country spoke on a variety of topics.
The academic sessions started off with the theme of peripheral venous interventions, with Dr. Edwin Stephen giving us an overview about the clinical perspective of peripheral venous diseases and their impact on the population, and Dr. Swati Halbe, who outlined the role of radiological imaging in peripheral venous disease. Dr. Vinu Moses and Dr. Chalapati Rao then proceeded to give us some insight into two relatively new modalities that have emerged for the treatment of varicose veins, namely foam sclerotherapy and endovenous laser sclerotherapy. Dr. Sanjeev Sharma gave us an interesting disclosure on recent advances in preventing deep venous reflux with respect to the current state of development of venous valves. Dr. Mathew Cherian emphasized the essential role of endovenous transcatheter thromboysis in acute DVT and also reminded us that this treatment modality was still being underutilised in present clinical practice. Dr. Sanjeev Sharma rounded off the peripheral venous intervention session with a talk on the history and use of IVC filters.
After a short break for coffee, the hepatic venous intervention theme took over, with Dr. Surendra Babu giving us an overview on Transjugular Liver Biopsies. Dr. CE Eapen then proceeded to give us a clinical perspective of Budd-Chiari syndrome and the differences in clinical presentation of the syndrome between the East and the West. Dr. SS Baijal gave us an overview of the interventional treatment options that are available for Budd-Chiari syndrome, followed by Dr. Shyamkumar who outlined the history and procedure of TIPS and DIPS and provided some practical hints on doing these two procedures. The hepatic venous intervention theme concluded with Dr. SS Baijal giving us an eye-opener into a relatively new and unknown treatment modality for treatment of gastric fundal varices with haemorrhage by balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration.
The third theme of the CME, neuro-intervention took off with Dr. AK Gupta eloquently outlining the anatomy and management of spinal vascular malformations. After a lunch break, the sessions continued with Dr. Mathew Alexander briefing us on the clinical presentation of acute sinus thrombosis and dural fistula and Dr. Uday Limaye discussing the management of acute dural sinus thrombosis. Dr. RV Phadke educated us on the imaging and classification of intracranial dural fistulas and Dr. Santosh Joseph then proceeded to enlighten the audience on the interventional treatment options for intracranial dural fistulas. After a short coffee break, the final session of the CME convened, with a panel discussion of a neurointervention case by Dr. Jerry Kovoor.
The closing ceremony commenced with short speeches by Dr. Chander Mohan and Dr. Khandelwal, vote of thanks by Dr. Shyamkumar and Dr. Rekha Cherian as well as singing of the national anthem.
The CME was well attended with about 185 registered delegates. There were lively and interactive discussions at the end of most sessions. Feedback forms were circulated during the conference and the responses indicated that the academic sessions as well as the various arrangements were well conducted..
We appreciate the endeavours of the ISVIR in promoting the role of vascular and interventional radiology in the country and look forward to many more such academic sessions in the future.
